She performs as Lyambiko.
It’s her father’s family name. He’s from Tanzania.
Her late mother was from East Germany, which is where Lyambiko was born and grew up. Lyambiko’s father had studied engineering there.
She grew up in the town of Greitz.
When she was growing up in East Germany she listened secretly to western radio stations. And did covers of songs by, among others, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton and Janis Joplin.
She went to Berlin shortly after the wall came down.
The city — and jazz — saved her.
Lyambiko discovered Nina Simone there. And Billie Holiday.
And she took her current Afro-centric stage name.
And the rest as they say is history, give her a listen.
A very worthy successor to Nina Simone!!!
I am listening to her new album “Safronia”. If you like Nina Simone or other Jazz singers in that arena, try it. You will not be sorry.

The video is not very interesting, but the sound is great.
